The Philosophy

SCIENCE THAT STARTS
WITH A COACHING QUESTION.

For more than 30 years, I have worked at the point where coaching questions meet scientific investigation. My research has never been about science for science's sake. It has always started with a simple question from the pool deck: Why is this athlete improving? Why are they plateauing? What can we measure that helps coaches make better decisions tomorrow than they made today?

That philosophy has shaped a career spanning international coaching, applied sport science, tertiary education, and research leadership. From Olympic podium campaigns to NCAA programmes, national governing bodies, and athlete development systems, my focus has remained the same: turn complex physiology into practical performance advantages.

My research has challenged conventional thinking in areas including glucose monitoring, lactate dynamics, metabolic modelling, power assessment, oxygenation, cardiac function, and athlete monitoring. Much of this work emerged directly from coaching problems that existing science could not adequately explain.

Teaching & Education

TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION.

Alongside coaching, I have spent more than 25 years teaching exercise physiology, sport coaching, performance analysis, human movement, and applied sport science at tertiary level. My teaching is grounded in real-world application, helping students understand not only what the science says, but how it can be used to improve athlete outcomes.

Today, my work continues to focus on bridging the gap between research and practice. Whether developing new approaches to metabolic performance intelligence, investigating physiological markers of adaptation, or building long-term athlete development systems, I remain driven by the same belief that has guided my career from the beginning: the best research starts with a coaching question, and the best coaching is strengthened by evidence.
